Free Mumia

graphic design

Placing a photograph of the 1971 Attica prison rebellion within the rallying cry Free Mumia, this poster draws connections between the internationally renowned political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal and the historical accumulation of U.S. carceral power. An outline of the Black Panther Party’s icon conjures the resilience embedded in Mumia’s ongoing radio broadcasts and the movements that threaten white supremacy and imperialism.

Prison Radio has been recording and distributing Mumia’s political commentary for over twenty years, a direct confrontation to state attempts to silence his journalism.

“The first time I heard a tape of Mumia’s radio broadcasts, it was the first time I fully understood why the government was so intent on putting him to death.”   – Assata Shakur
