In 2018 Palestinian poet Dareen Tatour faced up to eight years in prison for writing a poem calling for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestine. I designed this advertisement placed in The Nation, as well as developed the campaign website, video, and petition calling for Dareen’s freedom. Global organizations including PEN International, Adalah, Oxfam, 10 Pulitzer Prize winners, and over 300 prominent writers, intellectuals and artists, including Noam Chomsky, Naomi Klein, Dave Eggers, Alice Walker, Viet Than Nguyen, and Edwidge Danticat signed the petition and organized for Dareen’s release.
In 2019 the district court in Nazareth acquitted Dareen from all the charges related to the publication of her poem “Resist My People.” From the BBC:
“The poet’s case has become a cause celebre for free speech advocates and has drawn attention to a recent rise in Israeli arrests – of Israeli Arabs and Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.”
